As a frugal person, I will typically buy whatever brand is currently on sale to save a few pennies. This behavior has also led to me trying a bunch of products – in this case, vegan protein powders – to compare for you. Every once in a while though, when a product is that good, I might just become brand loyal. After a few ‘no-gos’ for me, I have found the best vegan protein powder.
For the sake of this article, I also tried a few more expensive vegan protein brands than what I would normally buy. I reviewed the plant-based proteins on taste, texture and cost. For each of the vegan protein powders I tested using a chocolate flavor in my Chocolate Mocha Smoothie.
Vegan Protein Powder Comparison
Product | Image | Review | Price |
---|---|---|---|
Purely Inspired Organic Protein Powder | Texture: This protein powder has a nice texture. I didn't need to flood it with liquid to get rid of any gritty texture like some other protein powders. It's fairly smooth. Taste: The flavor, for me, is unforgivable. I couldn't finish my smoothie when drinking it. To me, it tasted very manufactured and did not resemble a chocolate flavor at all. It has fairly decent reviews on Amazon though from other people, it could just be my taste buds. | $ | |
Vega One Protein & Greens | Texture: One of the reasons I am reviewing the Vega One Protein & Greens and the Vega One Sport is because their textures are completely different. The Vega One Protein & Greens has a very gritty, sandy texture to me. I found that I often had to add a lot of liquid to try to get rid of that texture. Taste: It has a relatively good chocolate flavor. It tastes slightly off to me, but not enough that I can't drink it. | $ | |
Vega One Sport Protein Powder | Texture: In stark contrast to the Vega One Protein & Greens, the Vega One Sport is very smooth. It reminds me a lot of whey protein powder in it's consistency. Taste: The chocolate flavor really shines in this protein powder. This is by far my favorite of the group. I've also had the vanilla, which is also fantastic. | $$ | |
Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein | Texture: The texture is of this protein powder is fairly smooth, but can come off a little bit chalky. Adding peanut butter to a smoothie, or banana helps it blend well. Taste: The chocolate flavor is really good in the Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein. I can never say that a protein powder perfectly tastes like chocolate, but this one is very enjoyable. | $$ | |
Nuzest Clean Lean Protein Powder | Texture: For the most part, the texture of this protein powder is very smooth. It can come off as a little chalky on it's own, but blended in a smoothie it's great. Taste: Nuzest Clean Lean Protein has a really good, creamy chocolate flavor. It doesn't perfectly mimic chocolate but it's pretty close! | $$$ |
The Results
The Best Vegan Protein Powder: Vega One Sport
Ultimately, I like the Vega One Sport chocolate protein powder the best out of all that I tried. The chocolate flavor is good and creamy and the texture is really smooth. It’s also a really great price considering the quality of the protein powder!
The Worst Vegan Protein Powder: Purely Inspired Organic Protein
Out of all of the vegan protein powders I have tried, I can’t say I will ever purchase this again. While I enjoyed the texture and the price of this protein, I could not get over the flavor. The manufactured chocolate flavor made my smoothie undrinkable.

We’ve been trying a few different protein powders! Thanks for sharing these vegan ones!
I like powder that is smooth. If something is gritty, I just can’t stomach it. I can handle chalky a bit better though. Thanks for pointing out the traits of each of these, it makes it easier to make the best product.
